COLOURizd collaboration, Upcoming Events and This Month’s Polygiene Pick

Welcome to the September edition of the Polygiene blog. This month, we got together with COLOURizd CEO and co-founder Jennifer Thompson for a deeper dive into Polygiene’s collaboration with the dyeing specialists. We also feature a review of the Montane Dart T-shirt, after it was put through its paces on a three-week cycling trip. Finally, we preview the upcoming FFF and Performance Days shows, and get a Polygiene Pick from Polygiene Head of Marketing, Rebecka Harvyl.

Polygiene x COLOURizd interview

Last month, we brought you news of an exciting collaboration with COLOURizd, the folks behind the QuantumCOLOUR™ – a mechanical fabric coloration system that does away with water baths, wastewater discharge, and reactive chemistry. Our recent collaborative trial saw Polygiene antibacterial technologies integrated into COLOURizd’s QuantumCOLOUR™ system, enabling mills to apply pigments, binders, and Polygiene protection at the same time, in a single, streamlined process.

As promised, we’re coming back to you with further details on how this fascinating project has progressed. Recently, we spoke to Jennifer Thompson, COLOURizd CEO and co-founder, about the company’s goals, what the collaboration has achieved, why the results were so exciting, and what the future holds.

Talking to Jennifer, the passion for innovation is abundantly clear. There’s a real desire to push things forward and develop new solutions that solve concrete problems. And this desire to lead from the front is one of the most appealing and important aspects of Polygiene’s work with COLOURizd on this trial.

Read our interview with COLOURizd CEO Jennifer Thompson .

Luke’s Montane T-Shirt Review

Last month, the resident Polygiene copywriter, Luke, selected the Lifeventure Silk Ultimate Sleeping Bag Liner as his Polygiene Pick, arguing it was an invaluable addition to his bikepacking sleep system. Well, Luke spent the last three weeks on his bike exploring Catalonia’s dusty forestry roads and farmers’ tracks, and has returned singing the praises of Montane’s Dart Tee. So we asked him for a quick review for the blog. Over to you, Luke.

The Montane Dart T-Shirt

While this wasn’t strictly a cycling holiday, my partner and I flew our bikes over to Girona with us. Partly, this was a practical and logistical decision. We were staying at three different campsites over the three weeks, needed to cart around our holiday gear, and didn’t want to rent a car. But we also did so because the area around Girona is home to some of the best cycling on the planet. And we didn’t want to miss that opportunity.

Of course, this meant deciding what to pack. When it came to clothing, we had to pack light (mainly because we had to fit the snorkels in the panniers and we are yet to cave on the question of a Kindle). For riding, I packed one traditional cycling jersey and the Montane Dart T-Shirt, as well as a pair of bib shorts and a pair of non-padded shorts.

We ended up riding a lot over the three weeks. We had taken our day-to-day, get-around bikes (or our “pub bikes” for anyone familiar with British bike categories), rather than anything fancy, because we wanted to ride them everywhere and anywhere, and we wanted to be happy chaining them up on the promenade to spend the day at the beach. We rode them to the supermarket. To museums. To secluded coves. To bars and restaurants. To bike shops when they suffered the inevitable mechanical. But we also did five or six “big days”, where we went out all day to cycle in the hills, with no other intention but to enjoy the ride.

On the first big day, I wore my cycling jersey. On the second, I wore my Montane T-Shirt. And then I wore it every ride after. It was light and loose, with a great cut that hung well and allowed for plenty of ventilation. It wicked sweat incredibly well, which it needed to in 35℃ (95℉) heat. And despite all the punishment I put it through (and thanks to Polygiene StayFresh technology), it kept passing the sniff test when I went to pull it on the next time. It made me feel more relaxed, and was perfect for the type of riding we were doing – where we might make an impromptu stop at a bar, check out a church or dive into the dark cool of a bookshop.

I wore the Montane T-Shirt whenever we jumped on the bikes to cover any real distance. The jersey lingered in my panniers back at the campsite. Over the three weeks, I washed it twice, and not once did I feel outrageously smelly in it. And I had every right to, riding in those conditions. If you are looking for a relaxed performance Tee that manages moisture well, boasts outstanding odor protection, and is ridiculously versatile,I couldn’t recommend the Montane Dart T-shirt enough.

FFF and Performance Days Preview

October sees the return of two of the biggest industry events on the calendar – Functional Fabric Fair (FFF) in the US and Performance Days in Munich. The Fall/autumn editions of these enormously influential trade shows will see exhibitors focus on textiles and textile technologies designed for cooler conditions, with a particular emphasis on durable, weather-resistant fabrics, innovative insulation solutions and versatile performance textiles designed to work well in layering systems.

Polygiene Freshness technology is integrated into a wide range of cold-weather textiles and products, particularly base layers, activewear, and items where sweat and other environmental smells are likely to impact freshness. You can find it in everything from skiing tees and hiking leggings to rock climbing mid-layers and ice hockey gloves. If you want to discuss how Polygiene technology can enhance your product offering, we would love to speak with you at one of the events. We’ll have teams at both FFF and Performance Days, so feel free to drop by and have a chat or book a meeting time using the link below.

FFF Portland runs from October 26-28 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon.

Performance Days Munich runs from October 13-14 at the Messe München in Munich, Germany.

September’s Polygiene Pick

Every month, a member of the Polygiene team picks a Polygiene-treated product they couldn’t do without. From favourite T-shirts to odor-resistant camping gear, these essential items are all the better for smelling fresher. This month, it’s Polygiene’s Head of Marketing, Rebecka Harvyl.

Rebecka’s Polygiene Pick – O’Neill Baselayer Bottoms

When it comes to cold-weather clothing, the first thing I reach for is my O’Neill Baselayer Bottoms . They’re just so unbelievably comfy. They’re also super-versatile. I can wear them in different contexts, for different activities, knowing they will keep me warm and comfortable, and that they will look great. The minimalist styling definitely helps in this regard, as the bottoms can be paired with almost anything.

Most importantly, they have received a double dose of Polygiene treatment and feature both Polygiene StayFresh and Polygiene OdorCrunch technology. This means they’re basically the gold standard when it comes to odor control. Couple that with the fabric’s excellent moisture-wicking performance, and you’ve got a perfect pair of winter leggings.

Colour Fresh – Talking to Jennifer Thompson about the COLOURizd x Polygiene Collaboration

Recently, we brought you news of an exciting collaboration with COLOURizd, the folks behind QuantumCOLOUR™ – a mechanical yarn colouration system that does away with water baths, wastewater discharge, and reactive chemistry. We wanted to see whether Polygiene additives could be integrated into COLOURizd’s QuantumCOLOUR™ system, enabling mills to apply pigments, binders, and Polygiene protection at the same time, in a single, streamlined process.

As the first stage of that collaboration comes to a close, we sat down with Jennifer Thompson, COLOURizd CEO and co-founder, to discuss what the collaboration has achieved, why the results are so exciting, and what the future holds.
_
Hi, Jennifer. Can you tell us a little about yourself?_

I’m Jennifer Thompson, CEO and co-founder of COLOURizd. I’ve spent more than 35 years in textiles, and I started where it all happens, as an intern in a mill. From there, I worked for a variety of textile technology companies that took me inside nearly every major mill in the US. I went on to run my own textile design firm, consulting directly with mills, and then became Director of Textile Design at Target, leading design and product development at retail scale.

Along the way, I also ran an executive coaching company called Deviant Thinking. The name says a lot about how I work. I’m wary of any process that exists mainly because it’s always been done that way, and dyeing is a perfect example. We’ve coloured yarn by soaking it in heated water for thousands of years, and then treated the wastewater as the cost of doing business. COLOURizd starts with a different question – what if you didn’t need the bath at all?

At COLOURizd, I lead the commercial side – business development, partnerships and investor relations. My job is to get mills, brands and capital partners to take that question seriously.

How would you describe what COLOURizd does?

COLOURizd is a technology company run by founders with decades of direct experience working on the mill floor. We supply our QuantumCOLOUR™ colouration technology to mills, enabling them to colour yarn at scale without baths, reactive chemistry, or wastewater discharge.

What makes COLOURizd unique is the way we approach the problem of chemical application from a mechanical perspective. Conventional dyeing means immersion. Think big vats and large volumes of water. Any chemistry that doesn’t bind to the fibre gets washed down the drain as effluent.

We come at this problem from a completely different angle. QuantumCOLOUR™ applies chemistry, typically pigment and binder, directly to the yarn. There’s no vat and almost no water. Because it’s a direct, mechanical application rather than an immersion process, nothing is washed away, so there’s no wastewater to discharge.

What does this mean in terms of efficiency savings?

The QuantumCOLOUR™ process uses about one litre of water per kilogram of yarn, compared with 50 to 110 litres for conventional yarn dyeing. That’s a reduction of roughly 98%, with zero wastewater discharge. And because there’s no dye bath to heat, energy demand falls too. The result is up to 73% lower CO₂ emissions, independently verified under ISO 14067:2018.

QuantumCOLOUR™ doesn’t refine the dyeing process. It changes how colour gets onto yarn.

What are the main pain points COLOURizd solves for its customers?

Water and wastewater. Dyeing is one of the most resource-intensive steps in textile manufacturing, and the water going in is only half the problem. Everything that comes out of a conventional dye bath has to be dealt with. That includes unfixed dye, salts, auxiliary chemicals, and heat. Treating that effluent is expensive. Discharge limits keep tightening, and in some regions a mill’s effluent capacity decides whether it can grow at all.

QuantumCOLOUR™ produces zero wastewater discharge. The small amount of water we use stays with the yarn and evaporates during drying, so there’s nothing to treat and nothing to discharge. Independent assessments have confirmed it.

So the headline is water. But what mills are really buying is less exposure. Less exposure to water scarcity, wastewater regulation, and energy prices they can’t control.

Can you explain what the Polygiene x COLOURizd project involves?

QuantumCOLOUR™ colours yarn without a water bath, and we wanted to see whether it could apply antimicrobial odor control at the same time. Antimicrobial treatments are traditionally applied as a separate finish at the fabric stage, which adds another process step with its own energy cost. So we tested whether QuantumCOLOUR™ could apply Polygiene’s chemistry at the yarn stage, in the same pass as the colour.

And what were the results?

The trial was incredibly successful. We applied colour and antimicrobial chemistry simultaneously, in a single process step, with excellent wash fastness. For both Polygiene and us, this is really exciting, as it addresses a known limitation of antimicrobial finishes.

While antibacterial treatments applied to the fabric surface via immersion can last a long time and provide ongoing protection, they will eventually diminish with washing.

QuantumCOLOUR™ delivers Polygiene’s antibacterial treatment into the yarn structure itself, enhancing its durability and improving its wash resistance.

Beyond this, the collaboration reinforced that this is the kind of partnership model I want to see more of – two companies addressing a real limitation and innovating, rather than simply repackaging an existing technology.

What’s next for the project?

Demonstrating enhanced wash fastness validates the core thesis behind our collaboration. But there are a few places we could take this next. We’re really interested in exploring whether colour fade could serve as a practical wear indicator for antimicrobial performance. At the same time, the project’s success raises the question: if yarn-stage application works for one antimicrobial chemistry, why not other Polygiene formulations, other fibers, and other functional finishes beyond antimicrobial treatment?

Thanks for your time, Jennifer! We look forward to sharing more about the Polygiene x COLOURizd collaboration over the coming months, and we are incredibly excited to be working with a company whose values so clearly align with the Polygiene ethos.

14 Ways to Remove and Prevent Pet Odors in Your Home

Removing and preventing pet odors in the home involves using odor-control technologies to tackle the root causes, such as odor-causing bacteria and smelly molecules, encouraging good pet behaviours, and implementing a regular cleaning routine.

While pets are fantastic companions and give owners plenty of joy, they can also introduce unwanted smells into the home. From damp dog fur and dirty paws to litter trays and well-used pet beds, there are many potential sources of pet odor around the house. In this guide, we explore 14 ways to remove and prevent pet odors in your home, so you can stay on top of the problem.

What causes bad pet odor in your home?

Pet odors are typically caused by shedding, skin oils, damp fur, and dirt. All of these factors contribute to the growth of odor-causing bacteria or the release of odorous molecules, resulting in unpleasant smells. These smells are strongest where animals spend most of their time, such as pet beds, furniture, and feeding areas.

Shedding and fur

Dogs and cats naturally shed hair and fur, which collect on carpets, sofas, curtains, rugs, and bedding. Fur itself may not smell strongly, but it contains skin oils, dirt, moisture, and other odor-causing substances.

Skin oils

Pets produce natural oils to keep their skin and coats healthy. When animals rub against furniture, carpets, pet beds, and other textiles, these oils transfer onto the fibers. Repeated contact will often leave fabrics with a distinctive pet smell.

Sweat, moisture, and damp fur

Moisture from paws, saliva, rain, and bathing is another major cause of pet odors in your home. That well-known “wet dog” smell is particularly noticeable because moisture helps release the odor-producing compounds in a dog’s coat.

Urine and faeces

Toilet accidents are one of the most unpleasant causes of strong pet odors. Urine can soak into carpets, upholstery, flooring, and even the underlying padding if you don’t treat it quickly. Cat litter trays can also become a significant cause of home pet odors if you don’t clean them frequently.

Pet beds

Pet beds are often overlooked when cleaning the home, despite being one of the places where pets spend the most time. Beds accumulate fur, skin oils, moisture, dirt, and microorganisms. If they are not washed frequently, they can become a persistent source of pet odor in your home.

Food and feeding areas

Feeding areas can get particularly smelly because there is often spillage and contamination. Wet pet food is particularly prone to developing odors if you don’t keep bowls and surrounding surfaces clean.

Dirty paws

After spending time outdoors, pets bring mud, moisture, and organic material into the house. These are then spread to carpets, rugs, and other textiles, creating another source of odor.

remove cat odors

The science behind pet odors in your home

Pet odors are produced by a mixture of volatile organic compounds, moisture, oils, dirt, and microbial activity. Odour-causing bacteria play an important role because they release smelly compounds as they break down sweat, skin cells, oils, and food residue as part of their metabolic process. Other odors are the result of naturally smelly molecules, like sulphur and nitrogen.

This is why pet odors can persist even when the home looks clean. If you are not tackling the invisible root causes – namely bacteria and odorous molecules – you will not get rid of the smell.

The downside of home pet odors

Pet odors don’t necessarily mean that a home is dirty, but they can negatively impact pet owners by:

  • Affecting sleep – strong odors from pet beds or textiles can affect sleep if they are noticeable at night.
  • Impacting comfort – persistent pet smells can make rooms feel less fresh. This can lead to pet owners feeling less comfortable in their own homes.
  • Being noticeable to guests – visitors may notice pet smells more easily as they aren’t accustomed to the background odor. This can be unpleasant for the guest and make homeowners more self-conscious.
  • Increasing home workload – if you don’t stay on top of pet smells, it can drastically increase the amount of cleaning you have to do and make home maintenance even more of a chore.

How to remove pet odors in the home

The most effective approach to removing pet odors in your home is to tackle both the source of the smell and the materials that have absorbed it.

  1. Deep clean carpets

Carpets trap fur, dirt, moisture, and odor molecules. Vacuum regularly and consider periodically using a deep-clean carpet machine or professional deep-cleaning service if you have several pets or particularly smelly animals. For urine accidents, act quickly and use a cleaner specifically designed for pet stains and odors.

  1. Clean rugs and mats

Rugs, runners, and doormats can accumulate a remarkable amount of pet hair and outdoor debris. Vacuum them frequently and machine-wash any rugs that can be put in the machine. Air drying rugs and mats also lets the sun’s UV rays kill off odor-causing bacteria.

  1. Use baking soda on suitable fabrics

Baking soda is a popular and cost-effective way to remove cat and dog odors you’re your home. Simply sprinkle a light layer over the surface, allow it to sit for a few hours (or overnight for especially stubborn smells), and then vacuum thoroughly. Always check that you can use baking soda on a fabric to avoid causing damage.

  1. Wash pet bedding regularly

Pet bedding should be treated like any other home laundry, and incorporated into your regular laundry routine. Choose beds with removable, machine-washable covers to make regular cleaning easier, and wash them every fortnight to keep home pet odors at bay.

  1. Use an air purifier

An air purifier can complement your cleaning routine by filtering airborne particles. Models with high-grade filtration performance, such as HEPA and activated-carbon components, are effective in homes where pet-related particles and odors are an issue. However, an air purifier is not a substitute for cleaning the source of the pet odor in your home, and should be used in conjunction with a regular cleaning routine.

  1. Use odor absorbers

Activated carbon and other odor-absorbing products can help manage smells in enclosed areas such as cupboards, near litter trays, or around pet equipment. Unlike fragrances and deodorizers that mask smells, odor absorbers capture unwanted smells rather than simply covering them. This makes them a useful addition to your home pet odor-control arsenal.

  1. Use an odor-eliminating spray

Odor-eliminating sprays work to tackle smells quickly and effectively. The Storm x Polygiene OdorCrunch spray  is a fantastic option if you want to freshen up pet smells without doing a deep clean or dedicating serious time and attention to the problem. It uses a silica-based solution to “crunch” the molecules responsible for unpleasant odors, enabling them to be released without smelling.

How to prevent pet odors in the home

Removing an established odor is only half the battle. Prevention can make maintaining a fresh-smelling home considerably easier.

  1. Improve ventilation

Good ventilation helps prevent cat and dog odors from concentrating in your home. Open windows when appropriate, use extractor fans, and make sure rooms with litter trays or pet feeding areas have adequate airflow. When rooms get stuffy, smells tend to strengthen.

  1. Remove cat odors by cleaning litter trays frequently

For cat owners, litter trays are one of the biggest sources of household odor. Remove waste frequently, replace litter as recommended, and clean the tray regularly. Positioning the tray in a well-ventilated area will also help. With litter trays, it is as much about getting into a regular routine as anything else.

  1. Optimize food areas

Food areas can get smelly quickly because there tends to be a lot of spillage. One of the best ways to tackle this is to optimize the feeding area so it is super-easy to clean. This can involve purchasing dishwashable food bowls and a wipe-clean mat to go under them. Clean the area every couple of days, and try to make sure it is well-ventilated, too.

  1. Groom your pet

Regular grooming removes loose fur and helps keep dirt and oils from accumulating in the coat. The right grooming routine depends on the animal and breed, so consult your vet or seek professional grooming advice if you are unsure what to do or how often to do it. Grooming in a controlled environment is also important, as you want to remove the loose fur from the house as soon as you are finished.

  1. Choose easy-clean materials

Where possible, choose washable covers, removable cushions, and hard-wearing fabrics for any furniture used by pets. Textiles absorb odors easily, and smells quickly get stuck in fabric fibers, so opting for easy-clean materials is essential.

  1. Challenge unhelpful behaviors

In some cases, the best way to prevent unpleasant pet odors in your home is to challenge the pet behaviors responsible for them. For instance, you may need to stop your pet from sleeping on the sofa if it has a significant impact on odors. Similarly, you may need to train your pet to recognize that it can only eat in certain parts of the home. It shouldn’t take treats away from its food bowl, for example. It is important to note that this often involves challenging unhelpful human behaviors, too. Pet owners are often just as responsible for pet behaviours as their beloved animals.

  1. Target high-contact textiles with odor-control technology

Cleaning remains essential, but odor-control technology can provide an additional layer of protection between washes. Polygiene offers technologies designed specifically for textile odor management. Polygiene® StayFresh is an antibacterial technology that inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria , while Polygiene® OdorCrunch2.0 is designed to capture odor-causing molecules and prevent their release. The technologies can be used in home and pet products, including pet beds and other household textiles, and both work to keep fabrics fresher for longer.

Polygiene odor-control technology in pet products

Currently, you can find Polygiene odor-control technology in products from Black Lab Brands , a business that designs thoughtful, durable, and comfortable beds for all kinds of lifestyles and all kinds of dogs. It incorporates Polygiene StayFresh into the following products:

FAQs

Why does my house still smell like pets after cleaning?

Your house may still retain that pet smell because you haven’t tackled the root causes – namely odor-causing bacteria and smelly molecules. A light, surface clean is not always sufficient, and odors may have penetrated carpets, furniture, mattresses, or other fabrics. Pet beds, blankets, curtains, and other textiles can also continue releasing odors after a general clean.

Alternatively, you may not have identified the source. A litter tray, dog bed, feeding area, or hidden urine accident could generate odors even after the rest of the room has been cleaned.

How often should I clean my home if I have pets?

Vacuum high-traffic areas several times a week, clean food and water areas frequently, remove litter waste daily, and wash pet bedding regularly. Deep-clean carpets, rugs, and upholstery as needed. However, every house has a different schedule. Homes with multiple pets, long-haired animals, or pets that spend lots of time outdoors may need more frequent cleaning.

Are air fresheners effective for pet odors?

Air fresheners mask odors temporarily but do not tackle the root cause. Consequently, the smell will return once the masking effect expires. For persistent pet odors, source control is more effective. Clean the affected textile or surface, remove waste, improve ventilation, and consider odor-absorbing or odor-control products.

Tackling home pet odors with Polygiene

Pet odors are a normal part of living with animals, but persistent smells don’t have to be. A combination of regular grooming, frequent cleaning, good ventilation, washable textiles, and targeted odor-control products can make a significant difference.
