Costain is one of three suppliers selected for Lot 1 – Collaborative Partners for England and Wales. In this role, Costain will provide comprehensive end-to-end engineering and infrastructure services, supporting customers from the earliest stages of project development through to successful delivery. The appointment provides public sector organisations with access to Costain’s strategic consultancy, engineering excellence and delivery expertise across all sectors covered by the framework, including rail, road, aviation, water, energy, defence and civil nuclear.

Drawing on its 161-year heritage and extensive cross-sector expertise, Costain will work collaboratively with customers to deliver project outcomes predictably and efficiently, improving constructability and managing risk throughout the lifecycle. By bringing together advisory, engineering and delivery capabilities from the earliest stage of a project, Costain will help accelerate project development and maximise long-term value for communities.

“This is another landmark moment for Costain as we begin our relationship with Pagabo and significantly increase the ways public sector organisations can access our expertise.

“Working collaboratively with Pagabo, the public sector and our supply chain partners, we will deliver predictable, best-in-class engineering and infrastructure projects that will improve people’s lives and create a more prosperous, resilient and decarbonised future for all.”

Alex Vaughan Chief Executive, Costain

The range of suppliers appointed have been rewarded based on evidence of their ability to collaboratively deliver high-quality infrastructure, civil engineering and enabling works projects across the UK. Through the procurement support that Pagabo provides, and the ambition proven by the appointed suppliers, the infrastructure sector is in safe hands.”

Costain appoints new Managing Director for SCS JV Bull 0 Bear 0 Management

  • Rohan O'Grady joins Costain and SCS JV to spearhead the construction of HS2's London tunnels.

Costain, the UK infrastructure specialist, has appointed Rohan O’Grady into its transportation division where he will take on the leadership of the Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture.

As Managing Director of SCS JV, Rohan will be responsible for leading the delivery of the London tunnels section of HS2 during a critical phase of the programme. He will ensure SCS JV maintains the highest levels of safety and productivity, to support HS2's programme reset and play a key role in the most significant addition to the rail network in over a century.

With more than 20 years’ experience in complex engineering, project execution, alliance delivery and executive leadership, Rohan brings a wealth of expertise in building and leading high-performing teams across a range of sectors, including infrastructure, energy and mining.

He joins Costain from CPB Contractors, the construction and infrastructure arm of Australian-based CIMIC Group, specialising in complex, large-scale, and critical infrastructure projects. Here, Rohan held a number of roles including the last four years as Alliance Director for the NEWest Alliance, a partnership of engineering and construction companies responsible for delivering A$2.9bn of critical upgrades to Perth’s METRONET passenger railway, including the 17.5km Thornlie-Cockburn Link project and the 14.5km Yanchep Rail Extension.

Prior to this, Rohan was Chief Operating Officer at Mineral Resources Limited and BGC Contracting. He also spent 13 years at Leighton Contractors, where he was Project Director on its Gorgon project for Chevron, one of the world's largest LNG projects and the largest single resource project in Australia's history.

“With his enviable CV and a successful track record at delivering large-scale mega-projects for both the public and private sectors, Rohan will be an excellent addition to Costain and is perfectly placed to lead the fantastic team working as part of the SCS joint venture.
“Under his leadership, HS2’s London tunnels will continue to be delivered safely and efficiently, which will be critical for the new high-speed railway that will add capacity to the network and drive UK prosperity for generations to come.”

Jonathan Willcock Managing Director, Transportation

“Costain has a unique heritage and a fantastic reputation for engineering excellence. I’m proud to be taking on the leadership of the SCS JV at such an important stage in the delivery of HS2. This is a project of enormous national significance, and I’m looking forward to working with the world-class expertise and talent that runs throughout the SCS JV to maintain momentum, ensure safety and build on the strong foundations that are already in place.”

Rohan O'Grady Managing Director, Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture

Rohan joins Costain following a period of significant success in the rail sector. Earlier this year, Costain was selected by Transport for London (TfL) to join its Infrastructure Improvement Framework , a multi-discipline framework which will unlock major infrastructure upgrades across the capital. This includes upgrade works at South Kensington tube station  and works to enable TfL’s step-free access programme.

  • TfL intends to award design and build contract to Costain through recently awarded Infrastructure Improvement Framework
  • Works will improve the passenger experience by upgrading station capacity and enabling step-free access throughout the station

Costain, the infrastructure solutions company, has received notification from Transport for London (TfL) that it intends to award a design and build contract to deliver transformative upgrades to South Kensington Tube station. The news continues momentum following Costain's recent selection to TfL's £700m Infrastructure Improvement Framework .

South Kensington station is used by tens of millions of customers every year and serves many museums including the Natural History Museum, as well as specialist hospitals and leading universities such as Imperial College London.

Costain is set to deliver the detailed design and construction work for the station improvements. These include providing step-free access throughout the station, including to all platforms, the ticket hall, and the subway that links the stations to nearby museums. In addition, a new dedicated eastbound platform for the Circle and District line will be brought into customer use and the station's heritage features on the platforms will be restored.

Once complete, the station improvements will significantly increase station capacity, tackle overcrowding and greatly improve access for wheelchair users, customers with buggies and other passengers with mobility needs.

Costain’s team of engineers will draw on its extensive cross-sector experience managing and delivering complex transportation infrastructure programmes. It is a long-term partner to TfL, having successfully refurbished the A40 Westway  and is delivering detailed design works at Brent Cross Interchange .

Costain will work with TfL alongside a joint venture between Native Land and Places for London, who will deliver around station developments in the surrounding buildings. Works will begin on site later this year and are due to be completed by 2031, which is also the 150th anniversary of the nearby Natural History Museum.

“Since being selected to Transport for London’s Infrastructure Improvement Framework, we’ve worked hard to support early-stage planning and mobilisation for the planned major infrastructure upgrades across the capital, bringing our engineering led solutions to the table to ensure predictable delivery.
“In close collaboration with TfL and our supply partners, we’re ready to deliver upgrades to the internationally important South Kensington station that will improve London’s transport network and enhance the passenger experience for decades to come.”

Alistair Geddes Rail Sector Director, Costain

“I’m delighted that our plans to transform the internationally important South Kensington station are fully progressing. Awarding the contract to Costain means that, working closely with Native Land and Places for London - our wholly-owned property company - we can deliver step-free access here for the first time, as well as provide improved space for businesses. It will also see the delivery of new homes, including on-site affordable housing, and radically improve the station for the millions of people who travel through or live in and around South Kensington.”

Andy Lord Commissioner, Transport for London
